ABSTRACT

Objective. To describe food expenditure and consumption of foods prepared away from home among Mexican adults. Materials and methods. Data were from 45 241 adult participants in the National Health and Nutrition Survey 2006, a nationally-representative, cross-sectional survey of Mexican households. Descriptive statistics and multivariable linear and logistic regression were used to assess the relationship between location of residence, educational attainment, socioeconomic status and the following: 1) expenditure on all food and at restaurants, and 2) frequency of consumption of comida corrida or restaurant food and street food. Results. Food expenditure and consumption of food prepared away from home were positively associated with socioeconomic status, educational attainment, and urban vs. rural residence (p<0.001 for all relationships in bivariate analyses). Conclusions. Consumption of food prepared outside home may be an important part of the diet among urban Mexican adults and those with high socioeconomic status and educational attainment.


Objetivo. Describir los gastos en alimentos y el consumo de alimentos preparados fuera de casa en población mexicana. Material y métodos. Los datos fueron de 45 241 adultos mexicanos en la Encuesta Nacional de Salud y Nutrición de 2006, representativa al nivel nacional. Se utilizaron estadísticas descriptivas y regresión linear y logística para estimar la relación entre el lugar de residencia, el nivel educativo y el nivel socioeconómico, con el gasto en todos los alimentos y en restaurantes, y con la frecuencia de consumo de comida corrida, en restaurantes y de la calle. Resultados. El gasto en alimentos y el consumo de alimentos preparados se asociaron positivamente con el nivel socioeconómico, el nivel educativo y la residencia rural (p<0,001 para todas las relaciones). Conclusiones. El consumo de alimentos preparados puede ser una parte importante de la dieta de los adultos urbanos y de aquéllos con altos niveles socioeconómicos y educativos.

ABSTRACT

OBJETIVO: Estudar a liberação de fatores relaxantes derivados do endotélio (EDRF) pelo endocárdio de aurículas de corações caninos. MÉTODOS: Aurículas atriais caninas foram suturadas em forma de tubos e o efluente desses tubos foram submetidos a ensaios biológicos (sistema de perfusão isolada em câmaras de órgãos) utilizando artéria coronária canina, para a detecção de EDRFs. RESULTADOS: O efluente da aurícula direita promoveu relaxamento de 58,4 + 10,1 por cento e da aurícula esquerda 74,9 + 8,5 por cento da contração inicial obtida pela ação da prostagladina F2α em artéria coronária. Não houve diferença estatística no relaxamento da artéria coronária induzido pelos efluentes das aurículas direita e esquerda. O relaxamento induzido pelos efluentes das aurículas direita e esquerda foi abolido pelo tratamento das mesmas com Triton X-100. O tratamento das aurículas com L-NMMA, um inibidor competitivo da síntese de óxido nítrico, e com indometacina, um inibidor da via da ciclooxigenase, promoveu redução no relaxamento da artéria coronária induzido pelo efluente auricular, indicando que o endotélio endocárdico libera óxido nítrico e prostanóides. CONCLUSÕES: Esse estudo demonstra, pela primeira vez, a liberação luminal in vitro de EDRF e prostaciclina pelo átrio de coração canino. A habilidade do endotélio endocárdico em produzir esses fatores pode ter um papel importante na prevenção da formação de trombos nas câmaras cardíacas.


OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the release of endothelium-derived relaxing factors from the endocardium of canine atrial appendage. METHODS: To study the release of endothelium-derived relaxing factor (EDRF) from intact atrial endocardial endothelium, tube-shaped sutures of canine atrial appendages were performed and effluents from these tubes were bioassayed (isolated perfused organ chamber system) for detection of EDRF in canine coronary artery. RESULTS: Effluent from the right atrial appendage caused a relaxation of 58.4 + 10.1 percent and the left atrial appendage 74.9 + 8.5 percent from the initial prostagladin F2α contraction in coronary artery. No significant statistical difference was detected in effluent from the right and left atrial appendages. This relaxation was abolished by treating the heart tubes with Triton X-100 and reduced by treatment with LNMMA, a competitive inhibitor of nitric oxide and with indomethacin, an inhibitor of the cyclo-oxygenase pathway, also indicating the release of vasodilatory prostanoids from the endocardial endothelium. CONCLUSION: This study showed for the first time, in vitro luminal release of EDRF and prostacyclin from the canine heart atrium. The ability of the endocardial endothelium to produce these factors could play an important role in preventing thrombus formation in the cardiac chambers.

ABSTRACT

Both the peripheral sympatho-adrenomedullary and central catecholaminergic systems are activated by various psycho-social and physical stressors. Catecholamine stores in the hypothalamus, hippocampus, adrenal glands, and heart auricles of long-term socially isolated (21 days) and control 3-month-old male Wistar rats, as well as their response to immobilization of all 4 limbs and head fixed for 2 h and cold stress (4°C, 2 h), were studied. A simultaneous single isotope radioenzymatic assay based on the conversion of catecholamines to the corresponding O-methylated derivatives by catechol-O-methyl-transferase in the presence of S-adenosyl-l-(³H-methyl)-methionine was used. The O-methylated derivatives were oxidized to ³H-vanilline and the radioactivity measured. Social isolation produced depletion of hypothalamic norepinephrine (about 18 percent) and hippocampal dopamine (about 20 percent) stores and no changes in peripheral tissues. Immobilization decreased catecholamine stores (approximately 39 percent) in central and peripheral tissues of control animals. However, in socially isolated rats, these reductions were observed only in the hippocampus and peripheral tissues. Cold did not affect hypothalamic catecholamine stores but reduced hippocampal dopamine (about 20 percent) as well as norepinephrine stores in peripheral tissues both in control and socially isolated rats, while epinephrine levels were unchanged. Thus, immobilization was more efficient in reducing catecholamine stores in control and chronically isolated rats compared to cold stress. The differences in rearing conditions appear to influence the response of adult animals to additional stress. In addition, the influence of previous exposure to a stressor on catecholaminergic activity in the brainstem depends on both the particular catecholaminergic area studied and the properties of additional acute stress. Therefore, the sensitivity of the catecholaminergic system to habituation appears to be tissue-specific.

ABSTRACT

Epithelial differentiation in cardiac myxoma is a rare phenomenon. Out of 104 surgically excised specimens, we studied 3 cases of cardiac myxoma with glandular differentiation. All the cases had well formed glands in addition to the myxoma cells lying in a myxoid background. Detailed histochemical and immunohistochemical studies suggest that the epithelial islands in cardiac myxoma show an enteric phenotype.

ABSTRACT

The distribution of prostaglandin-E2 (PGE2) and prostaglandin-F2alpha (PGF2alpha) was studied in subcellular fractions isolated from homogenates of human atrial fresh tissue by differential centrifugation. Right and left atrial samples were excised from the same heart of six patients with mitral valve disease at the time of open heart surgery. The atrial fractions investigated were mitochondrial (8,500 g pellet), microsomal (100,000 g pellet) and cytosol soluble (100,000 g supernatant) fractions. After extraction of prostaglandins from the three atrial fractions and separation of PGE from PGF series by chromatography on silicic acid column, these prostaglandins were measured by radioimmunoassay. The results, showed that PGE2 and PGF2alpha were located mainly in the soluble cytosolic fraction of right and left atrial tissue (p<0.001). Furthermore, the prostaglandins levels were higher in left than in right atria of these patients (p<0.001). The relation between prostaglandins heart generation in response to elevated work load of mitral valve disease is discussed.

ABSTRACT

The present study was aimed at investigating the atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) and urinary responses to acute perturbations in fluid balance and the vascular function in diabetes mellitus (DM). DM was induced in rats by treatment with streptozotocin (50 mg/kg, i.p.). Ten weeks later, the plasma ANP concentration measured in the conscious state was significantly higher in DM group (27.5 +/- 3.9 pg/mL) than in the control (15.4 +/- 2.6 pg/mL), while the atrial tissue contents of ANP were lower. In response to acute extracellular volume expansion (VE), amounting up to 5% of body weight over 45 min, under thiopental anesthesia (50 mg/kg, i.p.), the magnitude of increase in plasma ANP was lower in the DM group than in the control (56.8 +/- 25.2 vs. 189.1 +/- 53.6% increases over the basal). Urinary sodium excretion during VE was also lower in the DM group. Acetylcholine-induced relaxation of the isolated aortic rings was attenuated in the DM group, which was partially restored by L-arginine-supplementation (2 g/L in drinking water). These results suggest that body fluid homeostasis and vascular functions are unfavorably altered in DM.
